Colonia, Yap. September 30, 2014 – On September 10, 2014, Vice Speaker Paliknoa K. Welly and Chairman Yosiwo George joined Chairman Joseph J. Urusemal and Chairman Isaac V. Figir in Yap to express condolences and farewell on behalf of the entire 18th FSM Congress for the untimely passing of the late Chief Justice Martin Yinug.
At the Yap State Legislative Chamber, where the State funeral was held, Vice Speaker Welly joined Vice President Alik Alik and other speakers during the State funeral to say that “the untimely passing of Chief Justice Yinug is a great loss to the State of Yap and to this nation as well. A loss to the Judicial System he respected and loved so dearly.”
“We have lost a scholar with an outstanding legal mind,” he further added, “a Chief Justice, and a guardian of our Constitution. We have just lost a colleague, a friend, a loving and caring father and grandfather.”
Vice Speaker Welly in his statement went on further to encourage the listening audience to carry on the late Chief Justice’s tradition of “good judgment, sound decision-making, and the respect for the Rule of Law and our [FSM] Constitution.”
Vice Speaker Welly also remarked on admiration on the work of the late Chief Justice, and hopes that a comparable successor may be appointed to preserve the heritage of a “truly Micronesian Judicial System” that gives recognition to custom and tradition while honoring justice for all.
The Congressional delegation, along with Vice President Alik Alik, also joined the Yap State Leadership in a customary Yapese practice of offering condolences and appreciation to the family of the late Chief Justice Yinug for all his years of service to the government and to the people of Yap and the Federated States of Micronesia.
The Honorable Chief Justice Martin G. Yinug was laid to rest in his final resting place in Gilman, Yap on September 11, 2014.
